Is it a good idea to paint on old floors like press wood?
We replaced the carpet in most of our house with hardwood but kept the carpet in our kids rooms because the money was tight. Well now, while painting in our oldest daughters room we had an accident so we had to remove the carpet. I cant afford to replace the carpet or put hardwood down now so I want to just paint the floor and use rugs as a temporary fix. The problem is the floors of this house are presswood (horrible stuff). So will this work at all, and if so how should we go about it?

- Certainly it can work, and if aesthetics aren't a major issue so can an area rug. MDF is typical lately because of increasing lumber costs. Two decent coats of a quality floor paint will at the very least make it look better. Without knowing your budget, or the room size, HD sells bargain carpeting in 12 ft widths. as well as remnants. I just bout a 12 by 15 piece for less than $100. AND will have cuts to make. Steven Wolf
- I've actually seen it done on a decorating show, and it looked nice. It's a good temporary fix. I removed the carpet in my daughters room, thought it was hardwood under, but it was pine sub floors. So I decided to stain the center and paint a border and stenciled flowers it turned out cute. With pressed wood I would sand it well, apply a durable paint and polyurethane. Why not get creative? Just go with it.
- You can paint your floor if you like.It is better to use floor and porch paint
