Bathroom Remodel Layout Help?

I own a ranch style home that has a main floor and a basment. There is a 1/2 bath in master bathroom and a full bath (tub/shower) in the hallway bathroom. There is also a full bath (tub/shower) in the basement. I DEFINITELY want to put at least a shower in the master bathroom but there is no space in the current layout. Since the master bathroom and hallway bathroom are adjacent to each other I was thinking of knocking down the wall in between the two and basically putting a corner shower in the master bathroom and then taking out the tub in the hallway bathroom and making it a shower. Ideally I would like to have a shower in master bathroom, tub/shower in hallway bathroom and a tub/shower in basement bathroom but there is just not room for this unless I expand the exterior house walls and I don't want to do this. Would having two showers in the main floor and a tub in the basement be OK? I know families with kids always like having a tub but they could go to the basement for it.

  1. I am a mom of two little ones, and I for one would *prefer* that there be a tub on the main floor, located (presumably) near small children's bedrooms. If there is a chance that you will sell anytime in the next few years, I would advise against your current plan. If you want to stay in your home for several years down the road, go ahead and make the changes that make YOU happy. If you don't have kids (or others) who need the second bathroom upstairs, consider making yourself a really awesome master bath that has hallway access, and put overnight guests downstairs so they'll have their own bathroom. It also comes to mind that some relatives of ours used a main-floor bedroom for space for a master bath and walk-in. They had a ranch as well, with 4 br up, so that made it a 3 br 2 bath up, plus the finished basement. You might consider hiring an architect. They tend to be able to find space where there doesn't seem to be any. Many will charge a flat consult fee to help with problems like this. Good luck! I just love a project! ;)
