~ How Did You Decorate Your Kids Room ~?

My son is 5 and I would like to decorate his room and He won't give me any ideas on how I should do it. Also how did you organize all of there toys? When downsizing did you have your child help with getting rid of their toys? Also my son has a double size bed and I've been debating on getting him a twin size so he will have more room. But if I get him a smaller bed now in a few years I'll have to just get him a bigger bed. I'm stuck on this one.... Thanks for any tips!

  1. Ikea has a lot of fun stuff for decorating kids' rooms. Also, a twin size bed is fine well into the teen years!
  2. I would get a twin bed for more room. Spiderman or camo stuff is popular with the 5 year old boys I know.
  3. well the bed thing is easy. get him a new bed for now and save the current one to use later. that way u have your new one and still dont hae to buy another one is the near future. the toy thing...you can choose on what to keep. let him pick a few things he knows he wants but other than that he will probably not even notice that they are gone. on decorating...i really dont know srry.
  4. you organize their toys by buying bins and tot boxes. My parents let me pick and chose what toys i wanted to keep and it worked out good. I think you should leave the bed he has untill he outgrows it to save money.
  5. My 3 year old loves the movie "Cars" - so I did his room in that. Bought him the sheets and comforter, and the stick-ups to go on the walls. I made the curtains myself, since there was really cute lightning mcqueen fabric at wal-mart. As far as organizing toys, the best thing in the world is those things with a bunch of plastic bins that you can pull in and out - I was amazed at how much space that freed up in my son's room. I wouldn't suggest getting your son to help you get rid of toys. You have a good idea of what he plays with - if you try to ask him, he will swear he still plays with everything he owns. I wouldn't suggest getting him another bed - creative organizing can make up for a lack of space, and the plastic bins will help a lot. Good luck!
  6. I have a sports theme for my sons room. I have a border with sports on it and have sports decals on his wall. I picked a sports theme so as he gets older he won't out grow it like kids do with childish themes. I got a shelf that is made out of Baseball bats and a chalk board that is a score board. it is really cute and he won't out grow. With my daughter I did fairy's. Really cute. She won't out grow that either. Hope this has helped.
  7. A twin bed is plenty big for a child (in fact, I remember sleeping on twin bed up into my college years). My 6-year-old boy's room is TINY, so to organize his many toys I utilized underbed storage. I bought plastic containers that fit under his bed (take measurements and shop around)... I got three to fit under there (1 has puzzles, 1 has super hero costumes, and 1 has train tracks). I use a small bookcase to hold his coloring books and his favorite story books (the rest are elsewhere). A toy chest holds the most frequently played-with toys. He's really into dinosaurs so we painted his room a jungle green, bought some dinosaur curtains off ebay, and I made 2 large dinosaur cutouts for the walls. I suggest going with whatever you child's into at the moment. But keep the fad decorating in the accessories (don't go crazy on bedding and wallpaper) because kids change their interests so quickly. Unless you've got a lot of money to throw around, keep it changeable... you don't want to redecorate their bedroom every couple of years.
  8. Ikea is a lifesaver for me. I would suggest looking into a loft bed - you can go twin or full, and have a ton of extra room in the room. You can put dressers, toy boxes, desk, whatever under the bed and have tons of floor space. We have a loft, and all my daughter's friends think it's the coolest bed ever. As far as decorating, I kept the bedspread pretty basic, and went wilder with the sheets & throw pillows. Then I bought a cool cheap rug (from Ikea). I've found it's much easier to change the look by just buying new sheets, or just curtains, etc when I keep the main elements basic. I also enjoyed using Wallies (little wallpaper cutouts) to dress up the walls without having to unload her entire room and paint. I bought a large shelving unit (Ikea) with 25 square shelves - some of which we bought plastic cubes for (drawers). We fit everything in there - toys, games, cards, stuffed animals... and have just one tower bookshelve for books, and one bin in the closet for sports equipment. My daughter always helps with downsizing toys - and she gets to help choose where they go - ebay, thrift store, her cousin, etc. If it's good enough to go on Ebay, I let her keep the money. Good luck, and whatever you do, just have fun with it. It doesn't matter how it turns out if you're not having any fun. :)
